MCN carried out a full mechanical services refurbishment across a multi-storey residential care home in Sheffield, replacing ageing heating infrastructure with new LTHW distribution throughout the residential corridors and communal areas. The building remained fully occupied throughout, requiring careful programming and considerate working practices to protect residents and staff at all times.

Scope of Works

• Full replacement of LTHW heating distribution pipework across multiple floors and corridor runs
• Installation of foil-faced pipe insulation to all heating mains and branches
• Replacement of panel radiators with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) throughout residential corridors and rooms
• Removal of redundant pipework and making good following strip-out
• Reinstatement of suspended ceiling grids following completion of overhead pipe installation
• Full floor and surface protection throughout works using Fortress Trade floor film
• Phased working to maintain heating availability and resident access at all times

Working in an Occupied Building

Delivering a mechanical refurbishment of this scale in a fully occupied care home demands a level of discipline that goes beyond standard construction practice. The MCN team worked floor by floor, maintaining continuous access for residents and care staff, protecting all floor finishes with dedicated floor film, and scheduling any noisy or disruptive activities around residents' routines. The new pipework was routed overhead along corridor ceilings, fully insulated to current standards, before suspended ceiling tiles were reinstated to restore the finished appearance.

Delivery

The programme was carefully phased to avoid disruption to residents and care staff, with all heating services maintained throughout. Works were completed floor by floor and handed over sequentially, with the full installation finished on programme.
